The International Federation of Women in Legal Careers proudly welcomes Süreyya Turan, elected President of the Turkish Association of Women in Legal Careers. The Fédération Internationale des Femmes des Carrieres Juridiques has declared of interest the XIII Biennial International Conference of the International Association of Women Judges. Within the theme Women Judges and Rule of Law: Assessing the Past, Anticipating the Future, in this meeting —which will take place from 26 to 29 May 2016 in Washington DC, in the United States— Judge Susana Medina de Rizzo will assume the Presidency of the IAWJ. FIFCJ’s President, Mrs. Maria Elena Elverdin will attend the event. Women’s rights activists fear that a suspected rise in miscarriages linked to the Zika epidemic could lead to a surge in criminal prosecutions of women for deliberate abortion or homicide under El Salvador’s draconian abortion law. El Salvador is one of six countries with a total ban on abortion, and the aggressive persecution of women suspected of terminating a pregnancy has led to serious miscarriages of justice.

FIFCJ’s upcoming Bureau meeting will be held in Palermo, Italy, on April 20, 2016. The participation is free of charge for all members. Following the meeting, the Associazione Giuriste Italiane sez. Palermo will host an international conference regarding the following themes: Istambul Convention, immigration and citizenship, and support for the caregiver.

The sixtieth session of the of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 24 March, 2016. On this ocassion, the priority theme is: Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development. The pre-registration period for the CSW60 is now open.
